The Challenge
The departments of Aboisso and Tiapoum in the Comoé District are currently facing high incidence rates of Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) including scabies, pityriasis versicolor, ringworm, bilharzia, lymphatic filariasis and hydrocele.
Factors such as a lack of economic autonomy, inadequate health practices, social stigmatisation and limited access to clean water and sanitation pose considerable challenges when it comes to preventing and controlling these diseases.
The solution
The proposed project seeks to complement and build on existing efforts by focusing on economic empowerment, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) and livelihood programmes for the people affected.
By focusing on prevention and control through community awareness-raising in schools, churches and the media, it will promote healthy practices and disease eradication.
Impact
This project is expected to make a significant impact on the quality of life of the communities affected.
Economic empowerment and livelihood programmes will improve the economic autonomy of the people concerned. Community awareness-raising will reduce stigma and promote social inclusion. And interventions in water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) will improve living conditions and also help to prevent the spread of disease.
Taken together, these actions will contribute to reducing the incidence rate of NTDs and will improve the wellbeing of the population.
