The Challenge
People with disability in Togo constitute one of the most forgotten groups.
People with physical or intellectual disability are sometimes not even listed in the Togo population census. This neglect is nothing more than a reflection of the situation of abandonment they suffer in the country.
Many of these people are dependent and require third-party assistance to carry out their daily activities and receive health care, something which is rendered impossible without being registered.
The solution
We work in collaboration with the German NGDO DAHW and the Togo Federation of Associations for People with Disability (FETAPH) so that the Togo Government includes disability variables in its census.
- We coordinate joint action between organisations for people with disability, associate organisations and staff from the National Institute of Statistics, Economic Studies and Demographics (INSEED).
- We strengthen the capacities of INSEED actors and agents from the census on disability and managing questions, according to the type of disability.
- We compile the statistical data on this population in order to monitor their wellbeing and quality of life.
Impact
We want people with disability in Togo to exercise their rights and gain autonomy and quality of life.
Knowledge of their situation, having itemised statistics available and raising awareness on this section of the population will have a positive impact on their wellbeing.
