The Challenge
The health district of Tiassalé and the area of Toumodi are facing multiple challenges related to skin Neglected Tropical Diseases (skin NTDs), including Buruli ulcer (BU), leprosy and others.
These diseases have a serious impact on the quality of life of the affected rights holders, as well as their families and their communities. The lack of medical resources, shortage of trained personnel and difficult geographical conditions all contribute to the prevalence of these diseases and hamper access to adequate medical care.
The solution
The project focuses on addressing these challenges by developing income generating activities for vulnerable people affected by skin NTDs, as well as providing physical, medical and psychosocial support.
It will work in collaboration with local associations and federations to target and support the project’s rights-bearing population. In addition, community awareness-raising activities, training of health professionals and advocacy activities will be carried out to better respond to these diseases.
Impact
The project is expected to have a positive impact on the quality of life of the rights-bearing population affected by skin NTDs in the regions of Tiassalé and Toumodi.
By improving people’s economic, physical and social conditions, social inclusion will be promoted and the stigma associated with these diseases will be reduced. Moreover, by strengthening the capacities of local organisations and improving access to health care, a decrease in the incidence of skin NTDs is expected, as is an improvement in the overall wellbeing of the community.
