The Challenge
The Prefecture of Mô suffers from a high prevalence of skin Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) such as leprosy, yaws, scabies, bilharzia and hookworm.
A lack of access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene contribute to the spread of these diseases. On top of this, the widespread lack of awareness regarding NTDs and the Right to Health aggravates the situation, in particular for women and marginalised groups.
The solution
The project addresses these challenges by promoting hygienic practices and constructing latrines and wells to provide better access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation. The community will be trained on how to identify NTD symptoms early, and how to correctly refer possible cases to health centres.
In addition, gender- and health-awareness activities will be implemented to combat discrimination and promote equity for access to health care.
Impact
The expected result is a reduction in the incidence rates of NTDs and better health for the population.
Implementing measures to improve sanitation and for accessing safe drinking water will reduce the spread of related diseases. Raising awareness of the Right to Health and gender will foster more equitable participation in health care, thereby reducing stigmatisation and discrimination.
Taken together, these actions will significantly improve the health and living conditions for people in the Prefecture of Mô.
