The Challenge

Medical research is also conducted in African laboratories.

We carry forward work conducted by three of the main laboratories in Ghana that detect NTDs: the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR), the Chemistry Department at the University of Ghana (UG) and the Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research (KCCR).

The solution

  • We train technical laboratory staff and staff working in hospitals in different Ghanaian districts.
  • We improve diagnosis confirmations and foster their quality control.
  • We strengthen the supervision of work to handle and label samples under WHO standards.
  • We support the procurement of laboratory material and equipment used in analyses and diagnoses.

Impact

Research is key to reducing the impact of NTDs in contexts of impoverishment.

By supporting local labs, we manage to speed up and improve sample analyses that allow cases to be detected and to carry out early treatment for people who may be affected by NTDs.

Strengthening the African network of laboratories for Buruli ulcer research

There are currently no unified protocols for detecting Buruli ulcer. Although the WHO sets guidelines for the control of NTDs, many laboratories in Africa do not have standardised protocols for sample collection and subsequent screening and diagnosis of these diseases.
