The Challenge
Côte d’Ivoire is facing significant challenges to prevent and control Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs).
This is due to a scarcity of resources to treat and diagnose them, a lack of qualified medical personnel and socio-economic and cultural inequalities. Remote communities, notably in the regions of Mé and Gontougo, suffer from high rates of extreme poverty; this limits access to treatment, which, in turn, fuels the discrimination and stigmatisation associated with NTDs.
The solution
This project will focus on improving access to water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services, eliminating barriers and stigma, strengthening the capacities of civil society organisations (CSOs) and raising community awareness of Neglected Tropical Diseases.
Through awareness-raising campaigns, training that focuses on Neglected Tropical Diseases, civil society organisation networking and advocacy campaigns, it will seek to promote a change in attitudes and behaviour towards people affected by Neglected Tropical Diseases.
Impact
The project is expected to bring about a transformative impact on the community.
This will be achieved by significantly improving access to health and WASH services and, at the same time, will reduce the stigma and discrimination associated with Neglected Tropical Diseases.
By strengthening the capacities of civil society organisations and promoting awareness-raising, sustainable development and social inclusion are enhanced, this in turn raises awareness of NTDs and fosters community solidarity and collaboration.
