The challenge
In Togo, the health system lacks sufficient resources to combat easily treatable forgotten diseases.
NTDs contribute to a continuous cycle of poverty and stigmatisation, stopping those suffering from them from working, attending school or participating in family and community life. The Togolese health system lacks sufficient resources and trained staff to combat them, which in turn impacts the early detection of diseases and treatments.
The solution
In coordination with the German organisation DAHW and the Togo Health, Hygiene and Sanitation Ministries, we:
- Strengthen the capacities of different health agents in the country.
- Work with the WASH strategy in schools and health centres, installing handwashing devices, building toilets and raising awareness of good hygiene practices.
- Supply different health centres with medicines.
- Train physiotherapists from regional centres in disability associated with the Buruli ulcer and leprosy.
- Support Ministries in effectively managing the national programme to fight NTDs.
Impact
Through this work we are moving forward in our aim to eliminate leprosy, control the Buruli ulcer and eradicate yaws in Togo, following the WHO’s integral strategy to fight against skin-related NTDs.
Therefore, we help over one million people benefit who live in the six regions in which we intervene and are potentially exposed to these diseases.
