The Challenge
Until the launch of the Leprosy Research Initiative (LRI) in 2013, leprosy research had no structured pooled funding mechanism.
Funding was mainly from individual ILEP partner organisations but rarely from external sources. This limited the effectiveness and scope of leprosy research and affected the ability to properly address leprosy-related diagnosis, disability, transmission, stigma and discrimination.
The solution
The LRI was set up as a joint initiative by several ILEP partner organisations, including NLR, ALM, DAHW, Effect Hope, The Leprosy Mission International, Damien Foundation and the Anesvad Foundation.
Its aim is to establish and maintain joint funding for leprosy research and to secure additional funding from external sources. The Anesvad Foundation contributes financially and is also a member of the Steering Committee and the Executive Group of the LRI. In addition, it works hand in hand with experts – such as Dr Lucrecia Acosta – who provide technical support when it comes to evaluating proposals.
Impact
The LRI has provided funding for prioritising leprosy research that is aligned with the Global Partnership for Zero Leprosy (GPZL) agenda.
This has brought about significant advances for diagnosis, reduction of disability, understanding how leprosy is transmitted, and mitigating stigma and discrimination.
Collaboration with other organisations and experts has bolstered global leprosy research, improved the quality of life of affected people and contributed to more effective public policies in the fight against this disease.
