The challenge
Lack of access to safe drinking water and adequate sanitation facilities remains a reality for many families in the Zio Prefecture.
Poor waste management and difficulties maintaining basic hygiene practices contribute to the emergence and transmission of water-related diseases.
This situation is compounded by the stigma that still affects many people living with these conditions, which can hinder their participation in community life and delay their decision to seek healthcare.
The solution
Together with the Alliance Chrétienne pour le Développement Intégral, the project promotes an integrated approach combining improved access to water, strengthened community sanitation and health education activities.
The initiative includes the construction of new drinking-water points, the establishment and training of community committees to manage them sustainably, and training for the community members responsible for their maintenance. It also promotes community-led sanitation initiatives, the construction of community and school latrines, and awareness-raising activities on hygiene, disease prevention and social inclusion.
Impact
The intervention will help communities create better conditions for protecting their health and preventing water- and sanitation-related diseases.
At the same time, it boosts community participation in the management of shared resources and promotes sustainable changes in hygiene and prevention practices. Awareness-raising and inclusion activities will also help foster more respectful environments for people affected by Buruli ulcer and other NTDs, strengthening their participation in community life.
