From 2020, Fundaci\u00f3n Anesvad has contributed to more than thirty projects around the world with the aim of making progress on solutions against this disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Leprosy is an <strong>infectious and chronic<\/strong> <strong>disease <\/strong>produced by the <em>Mycobacterium leprae<\/em> bacterium<em>. <\/em>Unless treated promptly it can cause <strong>progressive and permanent damage <\/strong>to the skin, the nerves, the mucus in the respiratory tract, and the eyes. Although it is easily treatable, there are still <strong>major challenges <\/strong>around<strong> improving treatment <\/strong>and the<strong> consequences<\/strong> it has for those affected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2020, <strong>131 countries<\/strong> reported new cases of leprosy (127,506), mostly in Africa and south-east Asia. The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/leprosyresearch.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Leprosy Research Initiative (LRI)<\/a><\/strong> was set up in 2013 to <strong>promote high-quality research into leprosy<\/strong> in endemic countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Leprosy Research Initiative (LRI)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>LRI is an international initiative created by <em>Netherlands Leprosy Relief<\/em>, <em>American Leprosy Mission<\/em>, <em>DAHW<\/em>, and <em>effect:hope<\/em>, and it was set up with the aim of combating leprosy on different fronts. Following <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anesvad.org\/en\/projects\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">our joining as members in 2020<\/a>, we have supported projects to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Improve <strong>diagnostic<\/strong> techniques.<\/li><li>Research <strong>modes of transmission<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Attend to the <strong>disability associated <\/strong>with the disease.<\/li><li>Support <strong>operational research<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Increase awareness against <strong>stigma and discrimination<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2020 LRI funded <strong>29 research projects with a value of 1.3 million euros<\/strong>. By supporting this research we make progress so that persons suffering from leprosy can participate in the development of their communities and <a href=\"https:\/\/elpais.com\/planeta-futuro\/2022-01-29\/lepra-la-enfermedad-olvidada-que-tambien-eclipso-la-covid.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">live their lives free from stigma<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, we contribute to researching <strong>new faster and more effective diagnostic tests<\/strong>; we help to <strong>map zones and communities in Africa<\/strong> where leprosy is more widespread, and we design <strong>monitoring and supervision<\/strong> models for the disease to stop its incidence from increasing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Because what we want more than anything is a world free of leprosy.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Leprosy is an infectious and chronic disease produced by the Mycobacterium leprae bacterium.
