Is it possible to eradicate leprosy? Major progress has been made against this disease, and the main goal for 2030 is to eradicate it entirely. Interrupting the spread, scaling up research and ending stigma and discrimination are paramount.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n
To speak of leprosy is to speak of impoverished communities where access to basic rights is limited<\/strong>. Far from the stigmatisation that has been attached to this neglected tropical disease (NTD) since time immemorial, the WHO and international organisations have teamed up to end the scourge caused by leprosy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n As part of the roadmap for NTD 2021-2030, WHO designed the Global Leprosy (Hansen\u2019s disease) Strategy 2021-2030<\/strong>, coined \u2018Towards Zero Leprosy\u2019, which sets out the main measures to be implemented to eliminate leprosy by 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Leprosy is a bacterial disease<\/strong> that develops slowly, often over several years, and can damage the skin, peripheral nerves, eyes and mucous membranes, often leading to disfigurement and disability <\/strong>if untreated.. It typically presents as pale or reddish skin patches with reduced sensation, muscle weakness and numbness. Transmission is believed to occur through prolonged contact<\/strong>, mainly via respiratory droplets. While early treatment stops the disease and prevents disability, delayed care can result in lifelong complications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Also known as Hansen\u2019s disease, this is a chronic infectious condition caused by Mycobacterium leprae<\/strong>. Despite centuries of fear and stigma, leprosy today is entirely curable with multidrug therapy. The disease is rare in many parts of the world, yet it still affects marginalized communities, especially in parts of Asia, Africa, and Latin America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In the words of WHO\u2019s Regional Director for South-East Asia, Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh,<\/strong> \u201cthe Strategy promotes innovative approaches such as the use of targeted active case detection and the potential introduction of a safe and effective vaccine and calls on countries to develop \u201czero-leprosy roadmaps\u201d<\/em> and provide chemoprophylaxis to all contacts of confirmed cases. Crucially, the Strategy redefines the burden of leprosy to not only include persons in need of physical treatment and socioeconomic rehabilitation, but also persons suffering from the mental health impact of leprosy\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Strategy focuses on interrupting transmission and achieving zero autochthonous cases<\/strong>. It also focuses on investing in leprosy research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The WHO<\/strong> has established four main cornerstones for reaching the strategy\u2019s targets:<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is expected to achieve the following results by 2030:<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Zero Leprosy <\/em>initiative envisions a world free from leprosy and its consequences. It combines early detection, universal access to treatment, prevention of disability, and strong community engagement<\/strong>. Central to this strategy is breaking the chain of transmission while supporting affected individuals with rehabilitation and social inclusion. Governments, NGOs, and affected communities are working together to drive progress. The goal is not just eliminating the disease, but restoring dignity and opportunity to every person impacted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The World Health Organization has set bold targets to eliminate leprosy as a public health concern by 2030. These goals include zero new cases among children, zero disabilities caused by the disease and zero discrimination against affected persons<\/strong>. Achieving these targets requires strengthening health systems, scaling up active case-finding and expanding access to free treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Despite medical advances, eliminating leprosy remains challenging due to poverty, stigma and limited access to healthcare in endemic regions. Many people still delay seeking care out of fear or lack of knowledge. Health systems in affected areas often struggle with weak infrastructure and shortages of trained staff. <\/strong>Detecting and treating hidden cases before nerve damage occurs is another major hurdle. Combating leprosy will require addressing both biomedical and social barriers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Eliminating leprosy is not just a medical task\u2014it\u2019s a human mission that needs everyone\u2019s help. Volunteers, health workers, community leaders and donors all play a role in raising awareness, reducing stigma and supporting those affected.
