La Neglected Healthcare is that TV series that no one watches. The last post on the scroll. The girl who never had a date at the ball. The closing credits. The banner under the Skip Ad button. The product on the bottom shelf… There, where no one else looks, that’s where we have been looking for the past 50 years.
Who would want to be there? It’s unpleasant. It’s ugly. It’s not cool. It’s not something to click on like. It’s not good material for a story. Yaws, leprosy, Buruli ulcer, COVID… Diseases which still exist, even though they no longer affect you and me; even though the world forgets that curing them is not just about curing a handful of people.
So, even if just for one day, let us look. Let us look at their reality. Let us look at our not-so-distant past. Let us look in the eye those who, despite being neglected, greet us with a smile and with the hope of knowing that their plight is something that need not happen.
At Fundación Anesvad we have spent over 50 years fighting to eradicate the most neglected diseases in the most forgotten places. Because to forget them is to forget that healthcare is a right, not a privilege.
