The challenge

In Benin, neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) such as leprosy, Buruli ulcer and lymphatic filariasis cause disabilities that affect people’s lives.

The lack of psychosocial and economic support after recovery, coupled with stigmatisation and discrimination, hinders their social reintegration. Despite laws protecting the rights of persons with disabilities, their implementation is limited and barriers in terms of education, infrastructure and access to health services persist.

The solution

The project, led by the Federation of Associations for Persons with Disabilities in Benin (FAPHB in the French acronym), seeks to strengthen the capacities of organisations representing persons with disabilities so that they can exercise effective leadership in dialogue with local and national authorities. Social and economic inclusion will be promoted, especially for women and girls affected by NTDs, through awareness campaigns, training for government actors and the development of inclusive public policies.

The activities planned under the project are:

  1. Creation of an accessible website for the FAPHB and its 12 local networks. A digital space with articles and resources related to the rights and concerns of persons with disabilities in Benin, designed to inform and connect.
  2. Production and broadcast of 12 community radio programmes. These programmes will address key issues such as human rights, gender equality and gender-based violence, with a special focus on women affected by NTDs.
  3. Organisation of awareness-raising events on two key dates, 3 December (International Day of Persons with Disabilities) and 30 January (World Disability Day), with media coverage to raise awareness of rights and needs.

Impact

The aim is to build the capacity of 12 regional networks, raise awareness of the rights of persons with disabilities and encourage government actors to adopt inclusive measures.
