The challenge
In Ivory Coast, diseases such as leprosy, yaws and Buruli ulcer severely affect rural communities.
Despite the fact that free treatment is available, cultural barriers, lack of resources and weaknesses in the coordination of the health system hinder access and adequate care.
The solution
The project, led by Jean Baptiste Vatelot Hospital, seeks to strengthen comprehensive medical care in six health districts. It includes staff training, infrastructure improvements, surgical care, physical rehabilitation, psychosocial and educational support, and community awareness-raising activities.
In this project, three key lines of intervention have been identified to advance the fight against Neglected Tropical Diseases with cutaneous manifestations (skin NTDs):
- Promotion, prevention and community monitoring, strengthening local capacities, promoting active case detection and raising awareness among the population to prevent these diseases.
- Comprehensive, quality care for affected individuals, ensuring that those living with NTDs receive dignified, effective care tailored to their needs, recognising them as rights holders.
a. Coordination, advocacy and sustainability, supporting joint work between local actors and promoting the follow-up and evaluation of actions.
Impact
The aim is to improve the quality of life of those affected, guarantee their right to health and establish a comprehensive care model that can be replicated in other regions.
The project also strengthens coordination between local and national actors to ensure the sustainability of the fight against skin NTDs.
