The challenge

In several health districts in Ivory Coast, diseases such as yaws, leprosy and Buruli ulcer continue to severely affect vulnerable communities.

These Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) with cutaneous manifestations not only cause physical pain, but also social exclusion, stigma and barriers to exercising the right to health.

The solution

This project seeks to advance the eradication of yaws, the elimination of leprosy and the control of Buruli ulcer, in line with WHO objectives. To this end, an integrated approach is being implemented in six health districts, with specialised centres offering medical care, rehabilitation and social support.

  • Medical care and rehabilitation through the organisation of medical care for skin NTDs and other dermatological diseases and surgical care for patients with sequelae, aimed at their functional rehabilitation.
  • Capacity building through staff training on skin NTDs and other dermatological conditions, as well as educational support for hospitalised patients.
  • Coordination and advocacy through team meetings and biannual/annual meetings with national programme managers.

Impact

Improved detection, treatment and follow-up of NTD cases in the region, along with reduced stigma and increased social inclusion of affected individuals.
