The challenge

Neglected Tropical Diseases with Cutaneous Manifestations (skin-related NTDs) continue to pose a public health challenge in Côte d’Ivoire.

Many people need specialised medical care, ongoing follow-up and social support to cope with the consequences of these diseases.

However, limited healthcare resources, gender inequalities, certain cultural barriers and the stigma associated with some conditions make it difficult to access appropriate, quality care.

The solution

Together with the Confesional Notre Dame du Carmel Private Specialized Hospital in Sakassou, the initiative boosts comprehensive care for the people affected by skin-related neglected tropical diseases and other skin conditions.

To achieve this, the project strengthens the skills of healthcare staff, improves the resources needed to provide medical care and promotes awareness-raising, prevention and early detection activities in communities. It also promotes coordination and follow-up mechanisms that help strengthen the response to these diseases within the healthcare system itself.

Impact

The intervention helps ensure that specialised services have greater capacity and more resources to support the people affected throughout their care journey.

At the same time, it helps strengthen local capacity for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of these diseases.

Awareness-raising and support activities also help promote greater understanding of these conditions and create more inclusive environments for the people living with them, as well as their support networks.
