The challenge
In the Eastern region of Ghana, thousands of people live in rural communities where Neglected Tropical Diseases with cutaneous manifestations (skin NTDs), such as yaws, Buruli ulcer and leprosy, remain highly prevalent.
Lack of access to health services, safe drinking water and sanitation, coupled with stigma and discrimination, exacerbate the situation of those affected. In addition, low community participation in health interventions and weak surveillance systems hinder early detection and adequate treatment, perpetuating social and economic exclusion.
The solution
This project, led by Hope for Future Generations (HFFG), will be implemented in seven endemic districts in the Eastern region. Using a community-based and integrated approach, it seeks to improve early detection of cases, facilitate access to health services, offer psychosocial support, promote hygiene and sanitation practices, and strengthen the economic resilience of those affected. In addition, political advocacy will be promoted to increase funding and institutional commitment to the fight against skin NTDs.
Impact
A significant reduction in the incidence of skin NTDs in the intervention areas is expected, as well as improved access to health services and quality of life for those affected.
The project will also contribute to breaking the cycle of stigmatisation and exclusion, strengthening social cohesion.
