The challenge
In the Savanes region, in northern Togo, Neglected Tropical Diseases such as leprosy and Buruli ulcer continue to affect rural communities with limited access to health services.
The lack of trained personnel, poor health infrastructure and lack of knowledge about these diseases make early detection and adequate treatment difficult.
The solution
The project, implemented by ACDI Togo, focuses on strengthening the local health system by training community workers, improving health centres and carrying out awareness campaigns. It will also focus on providing physical rehabilitation and psychosocial support to affected people, as well as coordination between local and institutional actors.
- Community organisation and agricultural cooperatives: The organisation and institutionalisation of eight agricultural cooperatives, bringing beneficiaries together so that they can collectively access resources, training and economic opportunities.
- Promotion of sustainable livestock practices and access to financing: Environmentally friendly livestock farming will be encouraged and access to financial resources facilitated in order to strengthen the autonomy of the cooperatives.
- Nutritional education: Training will be provided on healthy eating practices and the preparation of infant flour, with the aim of improving nutrition in early childhood.
- Psychosocial support and combating stigma: Group meetings will be organised, and a psychological committee will be created, along with the provision of support to affected individuals and families.
Impact
A significant improvement in the detection and treatment of NTDs is expected, along with a reduction in the associated stigma and an increase in the response capacity of the local health system.
The project will directly benefit hundreds of people and contribute to guaranteeing their right to health.
