The challenge
In the Bono and Upper West regions of Ghana, thousands of people live in rural communities with limited access to health services, safe drinking water, sanitation and hygiene.
Neglected Tropical Diseases with cutaneous manifestations (skin NTDs), such as Buruli ulcer, leprosy and yaws, continue to cause disability, stigma and social exclusion. Women, girls, people with disabilities and impoverished communities suffer most from the consequences of these diseases, which are exacerbated by cultural barriers, lack of information and limited economic opportunities.
The solution
This project seeks to improve the quality of life of people affected by skin NTDs using an integrated approach that combines health, water and sanitation (WASH), psychosocial support, community awareness and economic inclusion. Work will be carried out in five districts in the Bono and Upper West regions, prioritising the most vulnerable groups. Actions include training health workers, constructing and rehabilitating wells, creating community support groups, distributing hygiene materials, conducting awareness campaigns on radio and in the media, and strengthening advocacy networks and multisectoral coordination.
Impact
The project is expected to significantly improve access to health services for people with skin NTDs, reduce stigma and strengthen community resilience.
It will contribute to establishing a replicable model of comprehensive care that combines physical, mental and social health.
