The challenge
In the Bono and Ahafo regions of Ghana, thousands of people live in rural communities where access to basic health services, safe drinking water and sanitation is limited.
Neglected Tropical Diseases with cutaneous manifestations (skin NTDs), such as Buruli ulcer, leprosy, yaws and lymphatic filariasis, continue to severely affect vulnerable populations, especially women, children and people with disabilities. Stigma, late diagnosis and lack of resources exacerbate the social and economic exclusion of those who suffer from these diseases.
The solution
This project seeks to strengthen the community health system and improve the response to skin NTDs in the districts of Asunafo (Ahafo), Sunyani West and Tain (Bono).
Work will focus on five key areas:
- Improved surveillance and research.
- Training of healthcare personnel and volunteers.
- Social promotion and awareness raising.
- Case detection and management.
- Economic empowerment through access to safe water and livelihoods.
In addition, psychosocial services will be integrated, and the equitable participation of women and vulnerable groups will be encouraged.
Impact
The aim is to improve access to health services for people affected by NTDs, reduce stigma and promote social inclusion.
The project will help to establish a comprehensive care model that can be replicated in other regions of the country.
