The challenge
In the Abomey region, Neglected Tropical Diseases such as leprosy and Buruli ulcer continue to affect vulnerable communities.
Lack of access to specialised services, social stigma and limited local health systems make early detection and proper treatment difficult. Those affected are often excluded from development processes and face barriers to social and economic reintegration.
The solution
The project led by CARITAS Abomey seeks to strengthen the local health system by providing staff training, improving infrastructure and increasing community awareness. It advocates for an integrated approach that includes medical care, physical rehabilitation, psychosocial and educational support, as well as advocacy actions to ensure respect for the rights of people affected by skin NTDs.
- Awareness-raising and community training activities are carried out on the topics of skin-manifesting NTDs and the right to health. Through workshops, radio broadcasts and community outreach, changes in habits are promoted. In addition, wells and water points are rehabilitated and constructed, and solidarity credit groups are created with the aim of improving living conditions.
- The project strengthens the resilience of affected women and children through psychological assistance, educational support, and vocational training. It also supports income-generating activities to promote the economic independence of beneficiaries.
Impact
The aim is to improve the quality of life of those affected, reduce stigma and enhance social inclusion.
The project will help to establish a model of care that can be replicated in other regions of Benin, improving coordination between local and national actors. It will also promote the active participation of communities in the response to skin NTDs.
