The challenge
In Ghana, more than 25 million people are at risk of contracting one or more Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs), especially in rural areas such as the Atwima Mponua and Atwima Nwabiagya districts in the Ashanti Region.
The high prevalence of diseases such as yaws, Buruli ulcer, leprosy and lymphatic filariasis is exacerbated by a lack of access to safe water, basic sanitation, health services and knowledge about these diseases. Environmental conditions, stigma, cultural beliefs and poor hygiene practices hinder early diagnosis and perpetuate the suffering of those affected.
The solution
The project seeks to reduce the burden of NTDs with cutaneous manifestations (skin NTDs) through a community-based, integrated approach focused on health promotion, prevention and behaviour change.
Awareness campaigns, volunteer training, the creation of hygiene clubs in schools, the construction of wells and educational activities at sporting events will take place. In addition, work will be carried out with women, children, people with disabilities, migrants and remote communities to improve access to information, services and decent living conditions.
Impact
The project will contribute to improving knowledge about skin NTDs, promoting healthy practices, reducing stigma, and strengthening community resilience to these diseases.
