The challenge
In Ghana, Neglected Tropical Diseases with cutaneous manifestations (skin NTDs) such as Buruli ulcer, leprosy, yaws and lymphatic filariasis continue to severely affect thousands of people, especially in rural communities.
Women and girls suffer the most from the consequences of these diseases, facing stigma, social exclusion, and structural barriers to accessing health, education, and economic opportunities. This is compounded by poor sanitation, lack of clean water, and discriminatory practices that perpetuate inequality.
The solution
This project, led by the Women’s Hope Foundation (WHF), will be implemented in 50 endemic communities in the Ashanti and Bono East regions, with a focus on human rights, gender equality and the social determinants of health. It will work closely with the Ghana Health Service and other local organisations to promote the well-being of people affected by skin NTDs. Actions include awareness campaigns, self-care training, access to education, construction of wells and latrines, psychosocial support, strengthening of community networks and spaces for dialogue between affected people and health workers.
Impact
The project seeks to transform the community response to skin NTDs by promoting a culture of inclusion and respect.
The expected outcomes are an improvement in the quality of life of those affected, greater local response capacity, and a reduction in the stigma associated with these diseases.
