The challenge
In Togo, women and girls affected by Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) are doubly vulnerable: on the one hand, they must contend with the physical and social consequences of these diseases, and on the other, they are subject to structural gender discrimination.
The lack of female representation in decision-making spaces and the limited integration of a gender perspective into public health policies limit the effectiveness of interventions and perpetuate exclusion.
The solution
The project, led by WILDAF Togo, seeks to empower women and girls affected by NTDs by building their capacities, promoting their rights and encouraging their active participation in political advocacy processes. Awareness-raising campaigns and training in leadership and human rights will be carried out, and safe spaces for dialogue between women, local authorities and health professionals will be created.
The specific activities are:
- Awareness-raising and psychosocial support: Organising community dialogue spaces, participatory communication activities and psychological consultations in order to support those affected and strengthen social cohesion.
- Water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH): Awareness-raising and training activities on hygiene and environmental health, along with the construction of latrines and wells to improve living conditions and prevent disease.
- Project coordination and monitoring: The project is coordinated jointly with other entities and local authorities to ensure its consistency and sustainability. Monitoring, technical supervision and auditing activities are carried out in order to ensure transparency.
Impact
The aim is to highlight the situation of women affected by NTDs, increase their participation in society, and advance the incorporation of a gender perspective into public health policies.
The project will contribute to reducing stigma and building a more equitable and inclusive society in Togo.
