The Challenge
Yaws, Lymphatic filariasis and other skin-NTDs cause suffering and disabilities in communities of the Aowin district in Ghana, in the South-western part of the country.
Limited access to WASH facilities and a lack of training and community awareness make these illnesses difficult to be eliminated.
The solution
Alongside REFCAM and MICDAK Charity Foundation, we are carrying out activities that tacklethree major components: prevention, recovery and economic support for people suffering from NTDs. For this purpose, we:
- Carry out awareness campaigns through community radio stations on the Aowin district
- Promote personal and environmental hygiene practices and advocate for improved water, sanitation and hygiene in both home and schools.
- Deploy community-based educators from within the communities who will be working on voluntary basis to support with the day-to-day care of the population. The CBEs will be trained on how to provide primary care including counselling of the patients and data management.
- Economically support 40 women and 10 men living with lymphatic filariasis with livelihood empowerment activities.
Impact
By the end of the project, communities in the Aowin district will be more prepared and resilient when managing skin-NTD patients and people suffering from these illnesses will gain autonomy and improve their livelihood.
