The Challenge
Ghana has a master plan to address NTDs at a national level and this initiative seeks to contribute address some of the most notable skin-NTDs that the country grapples with.
However, mental health is often disregarded when treating patients suffering from NTDs, especially those that are visible in the skin. It is necessary to work on how skin-NTDs affect the mental health of people and generate stigma and discrimination.
The solution
By supporting Basic Needs, a Ghanaian organization that work for social inclusion and opportunities for people suffering from mental health, we are tackling different aspects that improve the life quality of people with NTDs. Through this project we will:
- Contribute towards prevention, control and elimination of skin NTDs infection, meliorating the mental health and psychosocial impact of debilitating skin-NTDs and social stigma among suffering people, and increasing opportunities for inclusion and participation.
- Engender political commitment to health system strengthening for integrated services at the Primary Health Care level in Ghana, ensuring a sense of sustainability.
- Contribute to eradicate and eliminate skin-NTDs in Ghana, reduce the disease burden of skin-NTDs on both the affected people and the health system, especially at the Primary Health Care (PHC) level.
Impact
This project will support enhance health and wellbeing, including mental health, eliminate discrimination and exclusion, deepen human rights, as well as improve participation and productivity people affected by NTDs.
