The Challenge
Akuapim North and South Districts, located in the Eastern Region of Ghana, has seen an increase in yaws cases since 2020.
Yaws is a disfiguring NTD caused by a syphilis-like bacterium that affects mostly girls and boys and damages skin, bones and cartilage, leading to disability. Access to adequate water, hygiene and sanitation can prevent the disease and prevent further transmission.
The solution
We are currently working with the Ghanaian organization WATER in theAkuapim North Municipality and Akuapim South District to bridge the gap of adequate access to water, hygiene and sanitation (WASH) infraestructures in the area. the project aims to provide WASH infrastructures to increase prevention against yaws in the communities that don’t have proper assets. We are focusing on two main activities:
- Providing filter and handwashing stations in the school.
- Drilling boreholes in the area affected to get access to drinkable water.
Impact
Good water, sanitation and hygiene management will ensure that the Akuapim North Municipality and Akuapim South District are better prepared to deal with infectious diseases such as yaws.
