The Challenge

The eradication of skin NTDs from the Bono and Ahafo regions, where they are endemic, involves a number of challenges.

These challenges are such as limited staff capacity, lack of community involvement, inadequate access to health services and lack of responsibility of people affected by skin NTDs.

The solution

In collaboration with our partner Tim Africa Aid Ghana (TAAG) we will deploy a package of activities targeting different aspects related to NTDs:

  • Training: health workers, community volunteers and NTD advocates will be trained in active screening, referral and case management.
  • Mental health: to ensure that persons with disabilities are identified and can have improved mental well-being, they will receive training and a rehabilitation centre will be established which uses an integrated approach aimed at assisting those affected by the morbidity, disability and stigma associated with skin NTDs.
  • Research and data management: through training and the development of comprehensive surveys, improved routine monitoring will be achieved, integrating the community and feeding into national information, monitoring and reporting systems.
  • WASH: Community water and sanitation committees will be established in ten communities and hygiene practices will be facilitated through training and the construction of basic hygiene facilities.

Impact

This holistic approach will enable us to improve access and coverage for 6,000 people.

In three districts of Ghana by improving health care and extending it at community and psychosocial level.
