The Challenge
There exist evidence of lack of inclusion and participation of people with skin-NTDs in most community activities.
Stigmatisation and discrimination of people with skin-NTDs has limited their ability to access healthcare and treatment as they are not willing or confident enough to defy such discriminatory conditions in their communities.
As a result of the chronic level of discrimination faced by people with Skin-NTDs, they are unable or unwilling to take advantage of livelihood economic opportunities (skill training and capital provision) offered by the government or civil society organizations to access those opportunities because of fear of likely humiliation.
The solution
We support the Pan African Organisation for Research and Protection of Violence on Women and Children (PAORP VWC) in several districts of Ghana to:
- Increase people participation in the community to tackle NTDs.
- Organize community out-reach and awareness campaigns to provide information and education to address local level factors that heighten discrimination and stigma will help improve on community respect for the rights of people with Skin- NTDs and integrate them in community affairs.
- Provide livelihood packages, training and sensitizing to enable people with skin NTD generate income to be able to pay for their medical and nutritional needs.
Impact
By the end of this project, we expect people suffering from NTDs to have gained the strength.
And that they participate in decision making policies towards controlling and eliminating NTDs in Ghana.
