The Challenge

The Upper Denkyira East and Upper Denkyira West districts in Ghana are endemic of a number of NTDs, namely Buruli ulcer, yaws and leprosy.

The lack of knowledge about these illnesses and a poor access to Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) facilities makes it hard to stop the spreading of NTDs in the area.

The solution

In partnership with Rural Relief Services RRS, we are implementing an intervention thatincludes behaviour change communication activities to reduce stigmatization and discrimination, as well as improve healthcare seeking behaviour, which is essential for case identification and treatment.

It also includes water, sanitation and hygiene activities to enhance access to safe water and basic sanitation services and promote good personal and environmental hygiene which are essential for prevention of skin-NTDs.

Impact

By the end of the project, we will contribute to the achievement of the objectives of the Master Plan in the Denkyira districts of the Central region.

The Community Integrated Skin-NTDs Control project to be implemented in the Upper Denkyira East and Upper Denkyira West districts will prevent communities from suffering Buruli Ulcer, Leprosy, and Yaws.
